The Australasian Beekeeper – November 2020 – Vol. 122, No. 5

$10.00

Published November 2020

Welcome to the November edition of The Australasian Beekeeper, with Spring now in full bloom across Australia, lots of bees are foraging on the wildflowers and gardens alike.

In this edition, we continue our section ’For New Beekeepers’ with a detailed article on bee swarms and why they occur, whilst Mary Montaut guides us through the science of climate change and how this is directly affecting our bees. Graham Kingsman looks into the diaphanous wings of the bee, and why wing development is different for Queen, Drone and Worker bees.

We delve further into our lives revaluating what life would be like without bees and how our civilisation would be impacted. Jodi Goldsworthy gives us an update from Apimonda, with all the news and progress going on in these difficult times. Clarence Collison takes a closer look into the pheromones that a Queen bee emits to control their hive and we delve into the sweet history of medicinal honey

In our technical section, Randy Oliver gives us the 1st part of his experiment into improving pollen substitute for our bees. Dr. Stefan Stangaciu answers questions on Apitherapy around the topic of the health benefits we get from bees when stung to protect us against other pathogens. ‘In the Apiary’ we discuss the problem of hive beetles and how we can work on protecting our beehives from this invasive pest, and in recent research, you can read about honey bee nutrition and the Mite biter gene and the grooming behaviour it displays after targeting a single gene of the honeybee.

Don’t miss our regular catch up on the news in the bee world, including the report from the University of Southern Queensland on bee biosecurity and the reasons behind the failure of Queen bees. As always there is our readers letters section where you can ask our editor Des Cannon a question.
